What Is a Grade Calculator?
A grade calculator is an online tool that helps students work out their academic results from marks. It can calculate the percentage of marks earned, compare your score with the total possible marks, and show an estimated letter grade. Instead of working through each calculation by hand, you can enter your subject marks and see the combined result.
This grade calculator uses the marks earned and maximum marks for each subject. It adds the marks together, then divides the total marks earned by the total possible marks. The result is multiplied by 100 to find your overall percentage. A common letter-grade scale is then used to estimate your grade.
How to Use This Grade Calculator
- Add your subjects. Use the “Add subject” button for every course or paper you want to include.
- Enter marks earned. Type the marks you received in each subject.
- Enter total marks. Add the maximum marks available for that subject, such as 50, 75 or 100.
- Choose a grading scale. Select standard letter grades or plus/minus grades.
- Calculate your grade. Review your percentage, total marks, average and estimated letter grade.
- Save your result. Use “Copy result” to copy a text summary for your own records.
How Is Your Grade Calculated?
The calculator combines the marks from all valid subject rows. Each subject contributes according to its maximum marks, so a subject out of 100 has more possible marks than a subject out of 50.
1. Overall percentage
Percentage = (Total marks earned ÷ Total possible marks) × 100
Example: 255 marks earned out of 300 possible marks gives an overall percentage of 85%.
2. Letter grade
The calculator compares your overall percentage with the selected grade boundaries and displays the matching letter grade.
Grade boundaries vary by institution, course, country and assessment system.
Common Letter Grade Scale
The table below shows the default scale used by this calculator. It is a general example, not a universal academic standard.
| Percentage | Letter grade | General description |
|---|---|---|
| 90–100% | A | Excellent |
| 80–89.99% | B | Very good |
| 70–79.99% | C | Good |
| 60–69.99% | D | Needs improvement |
| Below 60% | F | Below the example pass range |
Who Can Use an Online Grade Calculator?
School students
Check test marks, subject percentages and an approximate overall result before report cards are released.
College and university students
Combine marks from different papers or modules when each assessment is scored out of a known total.
Students preparing for exams
Estimate the result needed in a remaining test by comparing current marks with your target.
Parents and tutors
Review a set of marks with students and explain how totals and percentages are calculated.
Grade Calculator vs. GPA Calculator
A grade calculator usually works with marks, percentages and letter grades. A GPA calculator estimates a grade point average using a particular grade-point scale and, often, course credit hours. The two tools are related, but they do not always produce interchangeable results. A percentage cannot be converted to GPA accurately without knowing the institution's conversion rules.
What This Calculator Does Not Include
- Weighted assessments: If exams, assignments and projects have different weights, enter a correctly weighted result or calculate each component separately.
- Credit-hour weighting: The overall result here is based on total marks, not university credit hours.
- Grade curves: The calculator does not adjust results based on class performance or a teacher's curve.
- Institution-specific rules: It does not know your official pass mark, rounding policy, or special grading rules.
- Unentered assessments: Your result only includes the subjects and marks you enter.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do I calculate my grade percentage?
Add your marks earned, add the maximum marks for the same subjects, divide the earned marks by the maximum marks, and multiply the result by 100. This page calculates the percentage for you.
2. Can I calculate grades for multiple subjects?
Yes. Add a row for each subject and enter its earned marks and total possible marks. The calculator combines the marks to estimate your overall percentage and letter grade.
3. Is this grade calculator accurate?
It accurately calculates the percentage from the values you enter. The displayed letter grade is only an estimate because schools and universities can use different grade boundaries and rules.
4. Can I use this as a final grade calculator?
You can use it to combine completed subjects or assessments when you know the marks earned and maximum marks. If your final grade depends on weighted assignments, exams or credit hours, account for those weights first.
5. Does a grade percentage automatically tell me my GPA?
No. GPA conversion depends on the grading system used by your institution. Check its official conversion chart or GPA policy before converting a percentage or letter grade into grade points.
